Bistritz, 3 de mayo. Salí de Münich a las 8:35 de la noche del primero de mayo, llegué a Viena a la mañana siguiente, temprano; debí haber llegado a las seis cuarenta y seis; el tren llevaba una hora de retraso. Budapest parece un lugar maravilloso, a juzgar por lo poco que pude ver de ella desde el tren y por la pequeña caminata que di por sus calles. Temí alejarme mucho de la estación, ya que, como habíamos llegado tarde, saldríamos lo más cerca posible de la hora fijada.	3 May. Bistritz. Left Munich at 8:35 P.M., on 1st May, arriving at Vienna early next morning; should have arrived at 6:46, but train was an hour late. Buda-Pesth seems a wonderful place, from the glimpse which I got of it from the train and the little I could walk through the streets. I feared to go very far from the station, as we had arrived late and would start as near the correct time as possible.
La impresión que tuve fue que estábamos saliendo del oeste y entrando al este. Por el más occidental de los espléndidos puentes sobre el Danubio, que aquí es de gran anchura y profundidad, llegamos a los lugares en otro tiempo sujetos al dominio de los turcos.	The impression I had was that we were leaving the West and entering the East; the most western of splendid bridges over the Danube, which is here of noble width and depth, took us among the traditions of Turkish rule.
Salimos con bastante buen tiempo, y era noche cerrada cuando llegamos a Klausenburg, donde pasé la noche en el hotel Royale. En la comida, o mejor dicho, en la cena, comí pollo preparado con pimentón rojo, que estaba muy sabroso, pero que me dio mucha sed. (Recordar obtener la receta para Mina). Le pregunté al camarero y me dijo que se llamaba "paprika hendl", y que, como era un plato nacional, me sería muy fácil obtenerlo en cualquierlugar de los Cárpatos.	We left in pretty good time, and came after nightfall to Klausenburgh. Here I stopped for the night at the Hotel Royale. I had for dinner, or rather supper, a chicken done up some way with red pepper, which was very good but thirsty. (Mem. get recipe for Mina.) I asked the waiter, and he said it was called "paprika hendl," and that, as it was a national dish, I should be able to get it anywhere along the Carpathians.
Descubrí que mis escasos conocimientos del alemán me servían allí de mucho; de hecho, no sé cómo me las habría arreglado sin ellos.	I found my smattering of German very useful here, indeed, I don't know how I should be able to get on without it.
Como dispuse de algún tiempo libre cuando estuve en Londres, visité el British Museum y estudié los libros y mapas de la biblioteca que se referían a Transilvania; se me había ocurrido que un previo conocimiento del país siempre sería de utilidad e importancia para tratar con un noble de la región.	Having had some time at my disposal when in London, I had visited the British Museum, and made search among the books and maps in the library regarding Transylvania; it had struck me that some foreknowledge of the country could hardly fail to have some importance in dealing with a nobleman of that country.
Descubrí que el distrito que él me había mencionado se encontraba en el extremo oriental del país, justamente en la frontera de tres estados: Transilvania, Moldavia y Bucovina, en el centro de los montes Cárpatos; una de las partes más salvajes y menos conocidas de Europa.	I find that the district he named is in the extreme east of the country, just on the borders of three states, Transylvania, Moldavia, and Bukovina, in the midst of the Carpathian mountains; one of the wildest and least known portions of Europe.
No pude descubrir ningún mapa ni obra que arrojara luz sobre la exacta localización del castillo de Drácula, pues no hay mapas en este país que se puedan comparar en exactitud con los nuestros; pero descubrí que Bistritz, el pueblo de posta mencionado por el conde Drácula, era un lugarbastante conocido. Voy a incluir aquí algunas de mis notas, pues pueden refrescarme la memoria cuando le relate mis viajes a Mina.	I was not able to light on any map or work giving the exact locality of the Castle Dracula, as there are no maps of this country as yet to compare with our own Ordnance Survey Maps; but I found that Bistritz, the post town named by Count Dracula, is a fairly well-known place. I shall enter here some of my notes, as they may refresh my memory when I talk over my travels with Mina.
En la población de Transilvania hay cuatro nacionalidades distintas: sajones en el sur, y mezclados con ellos los valacos, que son descendientes de los dacios; magiares en el oeste, y escequelios en el este y el norte. Voy entre estos últimos, que aseguran ser descendientes de Atila y los hunos. Esto puede ser cierto, puesto que cuando los magiares conquistaron el país, en el siglo XI, encontraron a los hunos, que ya se habían establecido en él.	In the population of Transylvania there are four distinct nationalities: Saxons in the South, and mixed with them the Wallachs, who are the descendants of the Dacians; Magyars in the West, and Szekelys in the East and North. I am going among the latter, who claim to be descended from Attila and the Huns. This may be so, for when the Magyars conquered the country in the eleventh century they found the Huns settled in it.
Leo que todas las supersticiones conocidas en el mundo están reunidas en la herradura de los Cárpatos, como si fuese el centro de alguna especie de remolino imaginativo; si es así, mi estancia puede ser muy interesante. (Recordar que debo preguntarle al conde acerca de esas supersticiones).	I read that every known superstition in the world is gathered into the horseshoe of the Carpathians, as if it were the centre of some sort of imaginative whirlpool; if so my stay may be very interesting. (Mem., I must ask the Count all about them.)
No dormí bien, aunque mi cama era suficientemente cómoda, pues tuve toda clase de extraños sueños. Durante toda la noche un perro aulló bajo mi ventana, lo cual puede haber tenido que ver algo con ello; o puede haber sido también el pimentón, puesto que tuve que beberme toda el agua de mi garrafón, y todavía me quedé sediento.	I did not sleep well, though my bed was comfortable enough, for I had all sorts of queer dreams. There was a dog howling all night under my window, which may have had something to do with it; or it may have been the paprika, for I had to drink up all the water in my carafe, and was still thirsty.
Ya de madrugada me dormí, pero fui despertado por unos golpes insistentes en mi puerta, por lo que supongo que en esos momentos estaba durmiendo profundamente.	Towards morning I slept and was wakened by the continuous knocking at my door, so I guess I must have been sleeping soundly then.
Comí más pimentón en el desayuno, una especie de potaje hecho de harina de maíz que dicen era "mamaliga", y berenjena rellena con picadillo, un excelente plato al cual llaman "impletata" (recordar obtener también la receta de esto).	I had for breakfast more paprika, and a sort of porridge of maize flour which they said was "mamaliga", and egg-plant stuffed with forcemeat, a very excellent dish, which they call "impletata". (Mem., get recipe for this also.)
Me apresuré a desayunarme, ya que el tren salía un poco después de las ocho, o, mejor dicho, debió haber salido, pues después de correr a la estación a las siete y media tuve que aguardar sentado en el vagón durante más de una hora antes de que nos pusiéramos en movimiento.	I had to hurry breakfast, for the train started a little before eight, or rather it ought to have done so, for after rushing to the station at 7:30 I had to sit in the carriage for more than an hour before we began to move.
Me parece que cuanto más al este se vaya, menos puntuales son los trenes. ¿Cómo serán en China?	It seems to me that the further east you go the more unpunctual are the trains. What ought they to be in China?
