He travelled all over the world to find one, but nowhere could he get what he wanted. There were a lot of princesses, but it was difficult to find out if they were real. There was always something about them that was not as it ought to be. So he came home again and was sad, for he would have liked very much to have a real princess. |

El anciano rey fue a abrirla. | One night there was a terrible storm with thunder and lightening. The rain was falling torrentially. All of a sudden one could hear somebody knocking the door of the castle very hard. Knock! Knock! Knock!. The old king went to open it. |

But, oh my god! what did she look like with the rain and the bad weather. The rain dripped through her hair and her clothes, it ran down to her shoes and out of the heels. In spite of this she said that she was a real princess. |

Después cogió veinte colchones y los puso sobre el guisante, y además colocó veinte edredones sobre los colchones. | "Well, we will soon find out", thought the old queen. Without saying anything, she went to the bedroom, she removed all of the bed clothes and she put a pea at the bottom. Then she picked up twenty mattresses and put them on top of the pea and she also put twenty quilts over the mattresses. |

He dormido sobre algo tan duro que tengo todo el cuerpo lleno de magulladuras. ¡Ha sido horrible!” | "I have slept very badly! - said the princess. - I hardly got a wink of sleep all night. What on Earth was there in the bed! I have slept on something so hard that all my body is covered with bruises. It was horrible. |

Sólo una auténtica princesa podía haber sido tan sensible. | That is how they knew that she was a real princess, because she had noticed the pea through twenty mattresses and twenty quilts. Only a real princess could have been so sensitive. |
| El príncipe la tomó por esposa, porque ahora podía estar seguro de que se casaba con una princesa auténtica, y el guisante entró a formar parte de las joyas de la corona, donde todavía puede verse, si no lo ha robado nadie. | The prince took her for his wife, becuase now he could be certain that he had married a real princess, and the pea became part of the crown jewels, where it still can be seen, if nobody has stolen it. |
